The Bible is more than a collection of stories to be read like a novel or a textbook. Memorizing passages so that we can instruct others is good but we should never use Sacred Scripture as a weapon to point out the faults of others. Jesus said, “Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?” (Luke 6:41). Sacred Scripture speaks directly to our hearts, guiding us in ways that will lead to our salvation and the salvation of others.
Hearing or reading the Word of God is a personal encounter that should deepen our relationship with God. “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” (Luke 11:28). Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to help us discern what God is saying to us.
Every word, phrase, sentence, passage, can have a specific but different spiritual enlightenment for each of us, depending on what God is trying to tell us; “The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12). The Word of God will both uplift and convict us.
Let us pray that through the grace of God, the manifestation of Holy Spirit is given to us, in accordance with the measure of Christ’s gift, for the benefit of others and the glory of His name. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
